DeBrazza's Monkeys
live in Central Africa from Kenya to Angola & from Cameroon to Ethiopia. These
Monkey's are Old World monkeys and are members of one of the largest primate
families in the world, the
Guenon family. DeBrazza's monkeys prefer to live in swamps, bamboo and dry
mountain forests near
rivers and streams, preferring closed canopy areas. DeBrazza's are considered
arboreal and terrestrial,
preferring to spend their time in trees, but also comfortable on the ground.
In the wilds, the DeBrazza's eat mostly fruit and seeds, but also eat young
leaves, buds, some flowers,
insects, some mushrooms and soil. Their bodies range from about 16 to 25 inches
long (3 1/2 to 5 feet
long including their tail!), and the males average about 11 1/2 to 12 pounds in
weight, females averaging
just over 9 pounds. Some members may weigh as much as 17 pounds.
Since they have cheek pouches, DeBrazza's monkeys can feed more quickly, taking
their time to chew and
swallow their food later.
DeBrazza's are considered to have stable population levels, and are thus
considered to be at lower risk of
extinction than some of the other members of their family. Natural predators
include leopards, crested
eagles and pythons, but the biggest threat to these animals are habitat
destruction and the breakup of
their
natural range.
