The Gray Wolf, Canis lupus, once roamed nearly all territories north of the equator.  Today,Gray Wolves (also called Timber Wolves) have been hunted to near extinction in the United States and are an endangered species.  There remain significant populations of wolves in Canada, and some native wolves in WIsconsin, Minnesota and Alaska, but few, if any individuals are thought to exist in Mexico.

Wolves typically live about 13 years in the wild, but may live to 20 years old in zoos.
