African lions belong to the family Felidae, which contains 18 genera and 36 species.  The genus Panthera includes other big cats such as the leopards, jaguars and tigers.

African lions roam a territory in central and southern Africa, including Senegal east to Somailia, East Africa, and Angola.  They are also found in Namibia and from the Kalahari to Mozambique and Natal.  Some lions are nomadic and will cover an area of up to 1500 square miles.

Lions live mostly in the savanna and open woodlands.  Male lions typically weigh from 330 to 550 pounds, but the females are about
100 pounds lighter.  Lions typically live for 12-16 years in the wilds, but may live to 20 years old in zoos.
